Professor Montuenga’s research is exclusively focused on lung cancer, with a broad area of interest: early detection and prognostic biomarkers; animal and cellular models of lung carcinogenesis; and new therapeutic strategies based on the molecular profile or the immune landscape of people with lung cancer.

He is co-principal investigator of the lung cancer screening Pamplona I-ELCAP project (a cohort of the I-ELCAP LDCT international consortium) as well as coordinator and executive board member of the Respiratory Tract Tumors Program at the Center of Biomedical Research Network in Cancer.

He is a member of the INTEGRAL biomarkers consortium, the EU4Health SOLACE consortium and the Spanish CASSANDRA lung cancer screening project. He has been a member of IASLC for over 20 years and currently sits on the Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee, having previously worked in the Prevention Committee.

Professor Montuenga has authored over 220 publications in oncology and cell biology, and is an associate editor of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.
