| Workshop: Implementing an effective screening programme for lung cancer
Date: Thursday 9 October 2025 Time: 09:45–11:15 ICT Location: Asia Conference on Lung Cancer, Equatorial Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam |
The Lung Cancer Policy Network is joining with the Asia Pacific Coalition against Lung Cancer (APCLC) and the Asia Pacific Policy Review and Engagement (ASPIRE) for Lung Cancer to co-host a workshop at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) 2025 Asia Conference on Lung Cancer on 9 October.
The workshop aims to support efforts to advance screening implementation throughout Asia Pacific. It will equip participants with practical strategies and insights to advance or refine their screening programmes – helping them progress from planning to successful implementation. It will also be an opportunity for wider knowledge exchange and collaboration among regional leaders in screening.
Screening implementation currently varies widely due to diverse health systems, lung cancer risk profiles and socioeconomic contexts. These challenges demand locally tailored strategies for planning and implementing screening programmes, which are vital components of comprehensive cancer control and essential for successfully detecting lung cancer earlier.
Using the Network’s implementation framework to facilitate and structure discussions, the workshop will focus on two priority topics: eligibility and recruitment and workforce and technical capacity. It will cover:
- methods for identifying and engaging target populations, and whether to include people who do not smoke
- strategies for engaging healthcare professionals in recruiting screening participants
- models for implementing screening within existing infrastructure capacity; for example, utilising X-ray and AI to increase capacity until low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening is fully rolled out
- assessing workforce capacity for screening delivery.
Participants will also hear about compelling case studies that offer insights from diverse implementation journeys. Interactive breakout sessions will foster peer-to-peer learning, bringing together participants representing programmes at varying stages (from pre-development to established programmes) throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
The workshop will build on previous work in the region, including an earlier workshop co-hosted by the Network and APCLC in October 2024, which explored shared challenges and opportunities in implementing lung cancer screening across Asia Pacific. Building on this collaboration, we developed recommendations to support and boost regional screening efforts further.
More recently, in July 2025, ASPIRE for Lung Cancer released a regional consensus statement focused on improving lung cancer care throughout Asia Pacific.
This year’s workshop takes place on Thursday 9 October, 09:45–11:15 ICT, at the Equatorial Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Attendees must also be registered for the IASLC 2025 Asia Conference on Lung Cancer.
