In June 2025, the Lung Cancer Policy Network hosted a webinar exploring how to build an economic case for lung cancer screening programmes. This informative session brought together a panel of global experts who shared key insights into the economic evaluations needed to drive policy commitment and secure sustainable funding.
While the clinical evidence for low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening is well established, broader implementation can still be hindered without securing political and financial backing. Discussions during the webinar highlighted how demonstrating cost-effectiveness and evaluating programme costs are critical to achieving long-term success with and equitable access to screening.
Designed for clinicians, screening leads and implementation researchers, the webinar outlined the principles of robust economic evaluation and explained why these are vital for influencing policy decisions. Real-world case studies illustrated successful strategies from around the globe – including Czech Republic, England, Sweden and Taiwan – showcasing how to effectively build and present the economic case for LDCT screening.
Attendees also had the opportunity to engage with the panel during a live Q&A session, fostering an interactive and practical learning experience.
We would like to thank webinar attendees as well as the expert panellists and speakers:
- Professor David Baldwin, University of Nottingham
- Renata Chloupková, National Screening Centre, Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic
- Dr Thomas Hofmarcher, The Swedish Institute for Health Economics (IHE)
- Professor Tom Stargardt, University of Hamburg
- Professor Pan-Chyr Yang, National Taiwan University
