Too many people are still diagnosed with lung cancer when it’s already advanced. Early detection changes everything.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, yet it is consistently under-prioritised in policy discussions.

Early diagnosis is critical. When lung cancer is detected at stage I through a screening programme, more than 80% of people can live for 20 years following diagnosis.

However, this is not the reality for most people.

Low‑dose computed tomography (#LDCT) screening is a proven, cost‑effective way to detect lung cancer earlier in people at highest risk. Despite this, access to LDCT screening remains uneven – and in some places it’s absent altogether.

We are calling on governments to give lung cancer the attention it deserves and to implement LDCT screening programmes as part of a comprehensive approach to early diagnosis.

Early detection is not just a clinical issue – it is a policy priority.

Earlier detection of lung cancer can transform outcomes – yet too many people are still diagnosed at a late stage.

The evidence is clear: when lung cancer is detected sooner, more people live longer and in better health. This allows people affected and their families to return to normality sooner.

Low‑dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening provides a solution to diagnosing people sooner, but many countries have not implemented screening programmes yet. This is a missed opportunity.

In countries where LDCT screening has been implemented, most lung cancer is detected at an early stage, when 8 in 10 people will be alive 20 years after diagnosis.

We urge governments to prioritise early detection and to include #LDCT screening as part of a comprehensive approach to lung cancer care

Earlier lung cancer detection saves lives. #LDCT screening can deliver this, but it is underused. Governments must prioritise early detection as part of comprehensive care.
